What’s really going into your masalas? The answer is alarming.
In a shocking raid conducted by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) in Agra, a turmeric processing unit was caught red-handed using hazardous industrial chemicals to wash raw turmeric before packaging it for public consumption.
Officials seized over 2,000 kg of turmeric—all of it potentially laced with acidic and toxic compounds. According to the report, these chemicals are meant for cleaning toilets and machinery, not for food meant to enter your family's kitchen.
Why Are These Chemicals Being Used?
Unprocessed turmeric often contains impurities and dull color. To enhance appearance and reduce costs, unscrupulous vendors use harmful acids, bleaching agents, and industrial-grade polishers—none of which are safe or approved for human consumption.
What Are the Health Risks?
Turmeric treated with sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or lead chromate can cause:
Kidney and liver damage
Severe stomach ulcers
Nervous system disorders
Long-term carcinogenic (cancer-causing) effects
Turmeric isn’t just any spice — it’s used daily in Indian cooking, often consumed by children and the elderly.
Not an Isolated Incident
This isn’t the first time turmeric has come under scrutiny. Across India, spices like haldi, red chilli powder, and even coriander have been found laced with synthetic dyes and industrial waste. The worst part? These products pass through local markets and high-end retail shelves alike.
